KEY WEST CELEBRITY S.L.A.M. TOURNAMENT RESCHEDULED FOR OCT. 17-19 KEY WEST, Florida Keys -- The 2008 Mercury Outboards' Southernmost Light-Tackle Anglers Masters (S.L.A.M.) tournament has been rescheduled for Friday through Sunday, Oct. 17-19. Anglers are to fish for tarpon, permit and bonefish during the popular tournament, originally scheduled Sept. 5-7 but postponed when Hurricane Ike brushed past the Florida Keys.
The forced date change necessitated venue changes for the acclaimed catch-and-release tournament.
"Our dockside host will be Hurricane Hole Restaurant and Marina, and Beachside Resort will be our host hotel," said tournament co-founder Susan Ellis. "We have come full circle since Beachside Resort was the site of our first three years of the S.L.A.M."
Tournament registration is slated for 4-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Beachside Resort and Conference Center, 3841 N. Roosevelt Blvd. A rules meeting and kick-off beach party are to follow.
Fishing is set for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18-19, after a daily continental breakfast dockside at Hurricane Hole Restaurant and Marina, 5130 Overseas Highway.
Participants earn points by releasing tarpon, permit and bonefish, and the eagerly sought "flats grand slam" is scored when an angler releases a fish from each target species.
Dockside parties with hors d'oeuvres are scheduled at Hurricane Hole after each day's fishing, and a barbecue awards dinner is set for Sunday evening.
Prizes are to be awarded to the champion anglers, teams and guides -- as well as the top anglers and guides in the spin/plug and fly divisions. Awards also are to be presented for the largest fish caught and released in each target species and the largest number of fish released in each species.
The grand champion angler will qualify for the 2009 Florida Keys Outfitters International Game Fish Association Inshore World Championship.
In addition, ESPN is to be on hand filming the event for its new ESPN Outdoors Saltwater Series.
The S.L.A.M.'s $3,000 entry fee includes two days of guided fishing, guide fees and access to all tournament social functions for a team of two anglers.
Proceeds from the S.L.A.M. and other Redbone celebrity tournaments benefit cystic fibrosis research. In 2007, Redbone tournaments worldwide raise more than $1.5 million.
Beachside Resort is offering a special $149 rate to anglers that mention the tournament when making reservations by phone at (305) 296-8100.

PARROT HEADS FLYING SOUTH FOR KEY WEST SONGFEST OCT. 30-NOV. 2 When Jimmy Buffett discovered Key West in the early 1970s, he couldn't have known that he would inspire millions of people to share his love for the easygoing subtropical island. Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 30 through Nov. 2, more than 3,000 fans of the legendary singer, songwriter and bestselling author will flock to Key West to celebrate their hero's music and the lifestyle it promotes.
The 17th annual Parrot Heads in Paradise Meeting of the Minds convention, titled "Bar Stools and Beach Chairs," offers a packed schedule of live music, parties, charity events and camaraderie for the fans named "Parrot Heads" after the colorful headgear they often sport at Buffett's concerts.
Key West, the entertainer's home during some of his most productive years, is credited with inspiring his hit song "Margaritaville" as well as albums such as "A1A," named for the highway leading to the island city. His lyrics are rich in references to Key West spots such as Fausto's Food Palace, the Blue Heaven Restaurant and the Chart Room Bar. His songs memorialize Key West characters like Captain Tony Tarracino and the late Phil Clark, whose real-life exploits unfold in "A Pirate Looks at 40."
In the mid-1980s Buffett founded the Margaritaville Store in Key West's Lands End Village. Today located on Duval Street beside the entertainer's Margaritaville Café, it remains one of the island's most popular visitor destinations and a mecca for Parrot Heads.
The flock's 2008 convention is to feature concerts by Buffett band members and musical friends as well as Parrot Head favorites. Other highlights are to include beachside performances, charity auctions, a street festival with live music and an oceanfront "Beach Bash" at the Casa Marina Resort, 1500 Reynolds St., the convention's headquarters.
In addition, in support of Margaritaville's mock "Buffett For President" campaign, the entertainer's vice-presidential running mate is to be chosen during the convention. The candidate who raises the most money for the Keys' Monroe Association for Retarded Citizens will become the VP pick.
While Buffett occasionally makes a surprise visit to Key West for the convention, members of his Coral Reefer Band are definitely scheduled to showcase their talents. Among them are keyboard master Michael Utley and steel drum wizard Robert Greenidge, headlining the band Club Trini, and multitalented guitarist Peter Mayer.
Other scheduled performers include Scott Kirby, Howard Livingston & Mile Marker 24, Tropical Soul and John Frinzi.
Most convention activities are open only to registered members of Parrot Head clubs, but the public is invited to attend the Margaritaville Street Fest, planned for 1-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, adjacent to Margaritaville at Duval and Fleming streets.
Street Fest entertainment is to be provided by Club Trini, Tropical Soul with Scott Bryan, a former member of Sheryl Crow's band, and the Boat Drunks. The event is sponsored by the Paradise Charitable Foundation, created to oversee Parrot Heads' community-based social, philanthropic and humanitarian efforts.
In fact, as well as sharing an appreciation for Buffett's music and the Caribbean atmosphere it promotes, Parrot Head club members focus on charitable, environmental, educational and humanitarian activities. Since 2002, members of the more than 200 national and international Parrot Head chapters have contributed more than $13 million and almost 2 million volunteer hours to local and national charities.
For more information about the Parrot Heads' convention in Key West, visit the Meeting of the Minds section of the Parrot Head clubs' official Web site at www.phip.com.

Red Cross urges renewed preparedness after two uneventful hurricane seasons
Hurricane season is almost here and there’s no guarantee that this year will be as calm for South Florida as the past two seasons. The quiet seasons from the past two years may have lulled some people into a false sense of security. But being prepared can save lives and property during a disaster. The American Red Cross urges everyone to dust off their disaster supplies kit and get better prepared now for hurricane season.
“By taking three basic preparedness actions you can Be Red Cross Ready for disasters and other emergencies 1) Get a kit, 2) Make a plan and 3) Be informed,” said Sam Tidwell, CEO of the American Red Cross Greater Miami & The Keys. “Your local Red Cross chapter is here to help you get prepared for specific disasters like hurricanes. Even if you took action to prepare last hurricane season, it’s important that you revisit and update your communication plan and check your disaster supplies kit for expired items.”
The American Red Cross recommends the following preparedness actions:
Get a Kit: Gather enough emergency supplies to meet your needs. A portable kit, stored in a sturdy, easy to carry, water resistant container should have enough supplies for three days. The Red Cross also recommends having at least two weeks worth of supplies at home and to keep a smaller kit in the trunk of your car. Check your kit and replace the stock every six months. Whether you purchase a kit or choose to build your own, your three-day kit should include: · A three-day supply of water (one gallon per person, per day) and ready-to-eat non-perishable foods, such as tuna fish, peanut butter, crackers, canned fruit, and juice boxes A manual can opener and cooking utensils
· A battery-powered radio or television, flashlight and plenty of extra batteries · A first-aid kit and reference guide Prescription and non-prescription medication items, eye glasses, contact lenses, and hearing aid batteries
· Copies of important documents, including birth certificates, insurance policies and social security cards · Cash. ATMs and credit cards won’t work if the power is out Extra clothing and blankets
· Special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members · Emergency tools, including tools to turn off utilities · An extra set of home and car keys Pet supplies.
Make a Plan The American Red Cross urges each and every household to develop a household disaster plan. · Meet with your family to create a plan. Discuss the information you have gathered and why it is important to prepare for a disaster. Plan to share responsibilities and work together as a team.
· Identify two meeting places; One right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency and one outside your neighborhood in case you can’t return home.
· Plan your evacuation route. Know where you are going and how you plan to get there. Plan to evacuate to the home of a friend or family member who lives outside of the evacuation zones. Red Cross evacuation centers should be used as a last resort; however, if you need to go to an evacuation center keep in mind that you must bring a sleeping bag, items to cover your basic needs, medicines and a change of clothes.
Be sure to make advanced preparations for your pets. There are specific pet-friendly shelters in Miami-Dade County. Space is limited. To pre-register your pet, call 3-1-1. Pet owners must provide the required supplies (including a cage, food, etc.), and make arrangements in advance of their pick up.
· Choose an out-of-area emergency contact person. During or after a disaster, it’s often easier to call long distance, especially if local phone lines are overloaded or out of service.
· Tell your family about the Safe and Well website accessible at all times via www.miamiredcross.org. The Safe and Well website is an Internet-based tool that allows those directly affected by a disaster to let their loved ones know of their well-being. People within a disaster affected area are able to select and post standard “safe and well” messages.
· Show and explain to each family member how and when to turn off the water and electricity at the main switches.
· Take a Red Cross first-aid and CPR class. Remember that during a storm emergency personnel will not be able to reach you and your family must be prepared for anything.
Be Informed: · Find out what types of disaster are likely to occur in your area and how to prepare for each. · Find out how local authorities will contact you during a disaster. Listen to local media broadcasts or NOAA Weather Radio for the latest storm conditions and follow the advice of local authorities. Contact your local Red Cross for details about community disaster education presentations that may be arranged or are available in your workplace, school or community organization.
· If you are told to evacuate, do so immediately. You may choose to evacuate sooner than alerted if you think you may need additional time.
